Montana Knife Law Snapshot

Short version: Montana is generally favorable for adult knife carry, especially after 2021 changes. Open carry is expressly protected for persons not otherwise prohibited, but school, courthouse, and prohibited-person rules still matter.

Generally allowed Open carry

Open carry is allowed for persons not otherwise prohibited.

Lower risk Adult ordinary knives

State law is relatively knife-friendly.

Place caution Schools / government buildings

Separate place restrictions remain.

History caution Older 4-inch concealed language

Older summaries may cite pre-2021 concealed-knife language.

Open Carry and Current Law Check

Place-based and local rules are where many EDC mistakes happen. Check the exact school, courthouse, airport, park, transit system, workplace, venue, and private-property rule before carrying.

Rule area What to know Status Source
Open carry Open carry is directly addressed in current statute. Caution MCA 45-3-111
Weapons part index Use the current 2025 code, because older online knife summaries may rely on older concealed-knife language. Caution MCA Title 45 Chapter 8 Part 3

Practical EDC Checklist

  • 01
Start with knife type: Confirm whether the knife is ordinary utility carry or a listed/restricted weapon category.
  • 02
Check carry method: Open carry and concealed carry can be treated differently.
  • 03
Check the place: Schools, courthouses, airports, jails, public buildings, parks, and private venues often have stricter rules.
  • 04
Check age and status: Minors, prohibited persons, and restricted-license contexts can change the answer.
  • 05
Avoid weapon-like conduct: Threatening display, unlawful intent, or criminal-use facts can turn a tool into a legal problem.
